OPS can then take credit for acting on one of the maindemands of the OPS -for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the death of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa, party insiders said.

Palaniswamy and OPS are likely to meet and finalise the reunion on the weekend. Reacting to the development, Dhinakaran warned of "surgical action" against Palaniswami and rubbished the party statements questioning his appointment as AIADMK (Amma) deputy general secretary and that of party chief V K Sasikala.

"It was a concerted decision not to include their names to send the message loud and clear that Jayalalithaa is still supreme in the party and appointments made by her still stands", a senior party leader said.

Sasikala is now in jail; she had appointed Dinakraran the party's deputy general secretary just before being imprisoned.

Palaniswami owes his position to Sasikala after her attempt to grab was frustrated by her conviction in the assets case by the Supreme Court. "Since Dhinakaran's appointment was not legally valid, all the appointments made by him recently were also not valid".

That affidavit can be withdrawn only if the Palaniswami and Pannerselvam merge and elect a new set of office-bearers which will supersede all previous appointments. The EC has frozen the party two-leaves symbol and acknoweldged the split in the party.

The question is whether Dinakaran will allow this.

Thursday's resolution also stated that Dinakaran can not hold any position in the party, according to its bylaws, since he had failed to maintain his primary membership for five years following his ouster by J Jayalalithaa, the party leader who died in December 2016. Sources said that the merger can occur as early as August 15.

If EPS moves an inch, Dinakaran will put down his government because he has 37 MLAs with him. Not that will be enough as almost 22 MLAs are loyal to Dinakaran. "If (DMK leader M.K.) Stalin brings a no-confidence motion again, we will win with more votes", he said.

Though Independence Day as been given as the deadline for the merger of AIADMK factions, but nothing seems to be working out as decision on CM and general secretary posts remains inconclusive.
