A provisional date has been set for September 26. Apart from those two countries, there are many more in the continent that have food safety scares.

Eggs, coming mainly from the Netherlands, were found to contain fipronil, a substance used to kill lice and ticks on animals that is banned by the European Union for use in the food industry.

A joint Dutch-Belgian task force conducted raids at eight poultry farms in the Netherlands, according to the Dutch prosecution service.

The insecticide can damage people's kidneys, liver and thyroid glands if eaten in large quantities.

"While in some European countries eggs containing Fipronil residues have been sold as fresh eggs, in the United Kingdom this is not the case", an agency statement said.

The others are Sweden, Britain, Austria, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Denmark and non-EU member Switzerland.

What is being done about it?

A spokesperson said investigations indicated it was "very unlikely" that the eggs posed a risk to public health.

More than 700,000 contaminated eggs have been shipped from the Netherlands to the United Kingdom, leading major supermarkets such as Sainsbury's and Waitrose to urgently recall stocks of fresh sandwiches, quiche and salads.

Millions of eggs have been pulled from supermarket shelves in Germany, as well as Belgium and the Netherlands.

It said traces of fipronil - which can be harmful to humans - were mixed with other eggs so chemical residues would be "highly diluted".

European Commission spokeswoman, Mina Andreeva said "no information about this contamination incident was provided" until 20 July.

The two suspects arrested were directors at the Dutch company Chickfriend, the company at the centre of the entire scandal, Reuters added.

Poultry farmers in the Netherlands have alleged that a substance that they bought from a Dutch-based farming company Chickfriend is what has caused introduced Fipronil into the eggs.

According to the Agency, in the United Kingdom infected mainly semi-finished products and processed products, where eggs are only one of many ingredients.

Why have countries been arguing?

"The Veterinary and Food Administration is following the issue closely, and can not exclude that further examination may uncover more imports of fipronil-tainted egg products to Denmark", it said.

The Netherlands denied the charge.
