Miami Dolphins Sign Jay Cutler out of Retirement

Cutler is expected to compete with Matt Moore for the Dolphins' starting job while Ryan Tannehill remains out with a left knee injury that could sideline him for the entire season. If Cutler does decide to stay retired, he will start his career in broadcasting with FOX Sports as originally planned.

He indicated he would consider a return to the league if the situation was right. The Cutler connection for Gase here was very obvious: he coached Cutler in 2015 when he was the offensive coordinator for the Bears.

Jay Cutler has agreed to a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins, luring him out of the broadcast booth. That includes a base salary of $5 million.

Cutler's previous relationship with Dolphins coach Adam Gase proved to be the reason the team signed Cutler instead of former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Cutler, 34, enjoyed success in his one season playing under Gase as he compiled a career-best 92.3 quarterback rating. Cutler continued to challenge defenses with 7.6 yards per attempt, but Gase allowed the veteran quarterback to significantly cut down on his interceptions. An MRI was inconclusive, and the Dolphins are consulting with specialists to determine whether surgery is necessary, which would likely shelve him for the season.

Tannehill, 29, suffered a similar injury to the same knee last December and at that time the decision between the quarterback and his doctor, and the Dolphins and their doctor was to treat the ligament rather than replace it.

But while joining the Dolphins could appeal to Cutler in the short term, he risks damaging his broadcasting prospects long-term. "So it was a surprise, and I think he has a lot of things to think through". The network has been operating all offseason on the assumption Cutler is aboard, shaping their broadcaster lineup accordingly.

This news comes not only as Cutler had seemed like he was contemplating retirement, but also as Miami is in peril in regard to their starting QB's situation.
