The rescue operation was underway by the time this report was first published. So far, the bodies of two people who’re dead were pulled from the river.

South Goa District Magistrate Swapnil Nail told IANS that the exact count of people missing was not known yet and that a sub-divisional officer had been sent to the site to take stock of the situation. It quoted South Goa Superintendent of Police, Shekar, saying four rescued were rushed to hospital seeing their condition.

The incident took place on Thursday evening when people gathered on the bridge following the suicide attempt by a youth.

The police said around 20 of them swam to safety.

"This evening a footbridge caved in here during which a crowd of around 50 fell into the river", a police official said.

Last year, a bridge across the Savitri River on the Mumbai-Goa highway collapsed taking lives of few people.

"A massive search and rescue operation is being carried out". This was a bridge of British era.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said he spoke to Parrikar following the bridge collapse reports.
